Mali Lošinj, one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Adriatic, famous for ideal climate conditions, special flora and fauna which include good dolphins and the antique statue Apoksiomen- has been chosen as the host of the 27th World Championships of underwater fishing by the leading world organisation of underwater sport fishing CMAS.

Mali Lošinj will accommodate, as the host of this prestigious sports event from the 14th to the 19th September, 23 representations, friends and supporters of 96 contestants, who will be able to show thier fishing skills in the beautifuls waters of Lošinj.

Along with the World Championships the hosts will organize numerous events such as concerts, exibitions, regatta's and other things.

Mali Lošinj has a long tradition of underwater fishing. The first underwater gun appeared on Mali Lošinj in 1950., and only six years later a northen Adriatic competition in underwater fishing was held in the waters around Lošinj. After that Mali Lošinj drew attention to itself in 1963. by organizing the 1st World Championships in underwater fishing and even then positioned itself as the world centre of underwater fishing. From 1957. they have held a traditional competition – the New Year's Cup in underwater fishing. The monument to an underwater fisherman in the centre of the town is witness to the deep bond the people of Lošinj have with underwater fishing.

Camp Slatina, operating with Jadranka kampovi headquartered in Mali Losinj, won a high award for innovative environmental protection ideas at a specialized camping fair in Lyon. The camp is situated in Martinscica on the island of Cres, and is known in both Croatian and international circles for its unique solutions, the most interesting among them being the Camping Cum Cane project.

The essence of it is in creation of coexistence between the guests arriving with their dogs and other guests staying in the same camp. Mutual tolerance is based on creation of conditions for dogs in the camp without interfering with other guests. This is enabled by the rules – all registered dogs must wear id tags, there is a designated toilet area and the dog owners must comply with the rules of hygiene in the camp. The camp also provides a dog shower area and a dog promenade. Camp Slatina also applies other innovative environmental protection solutions, while the introduction of the ISO 9001 standard, determining and implementing quality standards, and the ISO 14001 environmental protection standard, played an important role in the presentation of the award. The value added to this award is the fact that the camp award comes from the French travel market for the first time. As of this year, the rich facilities in the camp have been supplemented by additional ones such as bathroom facilities for children, diaperchanging area, family bathrooms for rent, ironing area and many other facilities.

Hotel Aurora, operating within Jadranka Hoteli, a member of Jadranka concern of Mali Losinj, was provided with four stars and new facilities following its reconstruction. The hotel has almost 400 accommodation units, including those adapted to the disabled. In addition to thorough renovations of all areas within the reconstruction process, the hotel was also provided with a wellness center on two levels and a multipurpose congress hall seating 400 people, as well as a conference hall.

The reconstruction of Hotel Aurora is the first stage of the comprehensive project for reconstruction of accommodation facilities within Jadranka Hoteli. Reconstruction of Hotel Vespera will begin in October of this year and reconstruction of Hotel Punta will begin in the autumn of 2009, which will be followed by demolition of the present Hotel Helios and construction of a new one under the same name. The plan also provides for reconstruction of Hotel Alhambra. The entire project should be completed by 2012, and the total value of the investment, including substantial investment in HR training and scholarships, will amount to 80 million euros, 24.4 million euros of which will be invested by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. After a voyage through many cities in Croatia, the famous statue of Apoxiomen will be on display in the Ethnographic Museum in Split until the end of September. The magnificent ancient statue of a young athlete dating back to the 2nd century B.C. has not ceased to attract the attention of domestic and international public ever since its discovery. In 1996, a Belgian tourist spotted the statue underwater next to the islet of Vela Orjula not far from Mali Losinj, after which it was extracted from the sea and restored by experts from the Croatian Conservation Institute with support of experts from Florence. The statute has so far been exhibited in Zagreb, Osijek and Rijeka, and it has also taken a trip to Florence where around eighty thousand visitors saw it.

The statue is considered to be a true masterpiece of ancient art, it is fully preserved, and was most probably made by Lysippus, a famous ancient sculptor. It is one of the few large preserved Greek bronze statues in the world – a similar one was found in Ephesus in the 19th century and is currently in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, while a head without the body is kept in Texas. There are several more replicas of Apoxiomen in the world, but they are made of different materials. After it completes its voyage across Croatia, the unique statue of Apoxiomen will be permanently exhibited in Mali Losinj, in the area where it was found.
