Salt Production as an Attractive Tourist Program

Apart from its basic activity, the production of salt, the salt pans in Nin, near Zadar, are also devising tourism programs. A couple of years ago, the Nin salt pans became a sort of natural park with organized guided tours for visitors. The Nin salt pans, along with the ones in Ston, are the only ones of their kind on the Adriatic, where salt is manufactured in a traditional way, as was done thousands of years ago, with sea water perspiring from shallow pools. This is why a procedure has been launched to protect the entire area as a natural good, a protected landscape of flora and fauna, with the end goal being protecting the entire laguna area, partly through the UN project Natura 2000. The Nin salt pans are spread over 55 ha of the Nin Laguna, right next to the ancient Croatian city of Nin, in the Zadar County. The salt pans date back to the Roman era. Venice purchased the pans and closed it down in 1550 to maintain its monopoly in salt production and trade on the Adriatic. It was re-established four centuries later, in 1955.Numerous tourists visit the salt pans during the summer and buy interesting souvenirs made from salt. The salt is produced in an entirely natural way, with the sea water perspiring from the pools because of the sun and wind, and natural sea salt crystallising. Nin salt has a high concentration of Iodine because of the algae in the sea water, which gives it a special place on the market. It is also sold as scented bath salt, enriched with natural oils (lavender, rosemary, rose, lemon, sage), thus combining several characteristics of the Mediterranean.

Croatia is the coolest destination

Erschienen in: Croatia, International Tourism, News, Tourism

The high-circulation British daily «Mirror» has put Croatia, Egypt, Turkey and Hungary among the coolest destinations for British tourist in 2009. According to the information about affordable holiday spots for this year provided by the British journalists, tourists will get the best value for money in these destinations. Due to the financial crisis that has weakened the national currency, a pound is no longer enough for a caffee latte in Paris or French fries in Spanish Benidorm.

This is why Mirror recommended its readers to visit destinations outside the European Union and presented Croatia as the first destination among its four favorites. In a very detailed presentation of the tourist offer, from Opatija in the north to the southernmost part of the coast, Slavonia and the interior, British Mirror says that the prices in Croatian hotels, restaurants and spas and ship cruise prices are 20 percent lower compared to other European countries. The presentation also underscores that Croatia offers something for everybody, so its recommends British citizens to visit Dubrovnik where they can enjoy themselves in one of the numerous restaurants arranged across the stone street of the old town, especially in the evening. Mirror informs the British readers that a romantic 5-star hotel will open in June on the island of Kor?ula, not far from Dubrovnik, within the Leši?-Dimitri Palace. The palace was built in the 18th century and offers six suites inspired by the silk roads traveled by the great Croatian explorer Marco Polo, while the old historical town of Lovran next to Opatija is recommended as one of the most attractive health resorts. In addition to numerous sandy beaches, crystal clear sea and a number of good hotels ideal for families with children, Croatia is equally interesting to young tourist and nature enthusiasts who can enjoy bird watching in Kopa?ki rit, photo-safaris on Velebit, wine tasting in Slavonia, rafting and many other activities… They also say Croatia is accessible via low-cost airlines such as Thomson Airways, EasyJet, Ryanair and Jet2.com.

Sport and tourism hand in hand

Erschienen in: Croatia, Dalmatia, Excitement, Inner Croatia, International Tourism, Istria, Kvarner, Sports, Varaždin
Erschienen am: 09.12.2008

16 January to 1 February, Croatia will host the 21st Men’s World Handball Championship Croatia 2009 to be held in several cities: Zagreb, Zadar, Split, Osijek, Varaždin, Porec and Pula. Sport halls, most of them multipurpose, are built for the occasion and will be opened during December, ready to receive the best handball players from the entire world.

As major sporting events like this always have a tourist angle, it is quite clear Croatia will present itself as an excellent host in this segment as well. The event was preceded by the Croatian Handball & Tourism Days in November, during which the Croatian tourist offer was presented in 13 countries participating in the championship, namely in the cities such as Budapest, Oslo, Copenhagen, Stockholm, Bucharest, Moscow, Warsaw, Belgrade, Madrid, Skopje, Paris, Frankfurt and Seoul. The presentation included press conferences, presenting the Croatian tourist offer to the invited guests and business partners with emphasis on the cities where matches will be played. This was also an opportunity to try the Croatian wine & gastro offer and see an entertainment program featuring prominent Croatian artists. The presentations were aimed to send a special invitation to business partners and guests and express a welcome to be felt by the athletes and guests in both the host cities and across the country.

Europe on a Budget

Erschienen in: International Tourism, Travel, international travel
Erschienen am: 25.09.2008

Traveling to Europe can be an expensive proposition these days. With oil prices reaching record highs and the US economy on a downward spiral, many people are finding that their dreams of a European holiday are being put on hold. But, there are ways to travel to Europe without breaking the bank.

Go east, young man

From the undiscovered beaches of Croatia to the Parisian style nightlife of Prague, Eastern Europe is a place to discover and be discovered while getting more bang for your buck. Inexpensive hotels, cheap beer, culinary treasures, and welcoming locals all entice the budget traveler to the countries of the former Soviet bloc. Finding a cheap flight might be more difficult, but once you’re there, you’ll be sure to make up the difference and then some.

Off season is key

Stay away from Europe and Eastern Europe in the summer. Airfare is through the roof, hotels fill up quickly and raise there prices even quicker, squares are busting at the seams with tourists, and most everything will cost you more. Conversely, autumn is the perfect time to travel; airfares are at their cheapest, hotels offer off-peak season discounts, and the tourists disappear.

Consider a hostel

You’re never too old to stay at a hostel. And if you’re worried about sleeping in a twelve bed dorm room, you may be surprised to learn that many hostels offer private rooms for a fraction of the price of a standard hotel. Yes, you may still have to share a bathroom and you certainly won’t get those nifty hotel soaps, but you will have a lot of extra money in your pocket.

Set a budget

Not having a firm budget can be the single most expensive mistake. Research your trip beforehand and allocate yourself a certain amount of money a day. This will deter you from spending needless cash on trinkets and that extra beer. It all adds up!

Visit Eurotrip

As the largest community of budget travelers to Europe, eurotrip.com offers advice for anyone who wants to save some money while trekking through Europe. From cheap flights to bargain pints, Eurotrip covers it all.
